Overview
Ghana, the West African nation cradled by the Gulf of Guinea, is a land of gold-rich earth, palm-fringed coastlines and the booming markets of Accra and Kumasi. The first sub-Saharan country to win independence from colonial rule in 1957, it carries a proud pan-African identity that bleeds directly into its football.
From the fishing communities of Cape Coast to the bustling lorry parks of the capital, the rhythm of life is fast, communal and joyful. The national team, the Black Stars, take their name from the black star on Ghana's flag — a symbol of African emancipation and unity.
Football here is religion, identity and national mood-setter all at once, capable of stopping the entire country in its tracks.
Football culture
Match days transform Ghana into a sea of red, gold and green, with vuvuzelas, drums and dancing in every viewing center. The domestic Hearts of Oak–Asante Kotoko rivalry is one of Africa's fiercest, and the nation produces a relentless conveyor belt of talent exported across Europe.
World Cup history
Ghana stunned the world on debut in 2006, reaching the last 16, then in 2010 became only the third African side to reach a World Cup quarter-final — agonizingly losing to Uruguay on penalties after Luis Suarez's infamous handball. They returned in 2014 and 2022 but fell at the group stage both times.
