Overview

Argentina is the second-largest country in South America, stretching from the subtropical north to the windswept glaciers of Patagonia, with the vast pampas in between. Buenos Aires, its cosmopolitan capital, pulses with tango, café culture and an unrivalled passion for football.

Few nations fuse identity and football as tightly as Argentina. From dusty potreros to the cathedral-like Bombonera, the game is woven into national life, mythology and emotion.

The country has produced two of the sport's defining geniuses — Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi — and treats football as something close to religion.

Football culture

Football here is operatic, tribal and deeply emotional, with the Boca–River *Superclásico* among the fiercest rivalries on earth. Supporters sing for ninety minutes and treat their idols as folk saints. The 2022 triumph sparked one of the largest street celebrations in human history.

World Cup history

Argentina are three-time world champions, lifting the trophy in 1978, 1986 and 2022. Maradona dragged the nation to glory in Mexico '86, while Messi finally completed his legend in Qatar. They have also finished runners-up three times, in 1930, 1990 and 2014.
